The name of Karatsu in Saga means the port to the Tang Kingdom, signifying its importance as a gateway between China and Japan in the ancient times. The city is also famous for its intangible heritage - Karatsu Kunchi, which is held once a year in November, I witnessed the Kunchi festival in 2019.
